If you’ve lived in your home for 30-plus years, you aren’t simply packing up a house. You’re packing up a life, and in my experience, that’s the part of a move that slows people down long before they ever call me. The hurdle is rarely the market or the price. More often, it’s the basement, the attic, and the garage.

The pattern is a familiar one. A homeowner knows it’s the right time to move, walks downstairs, takes in three decades of accumulated life, and quietly closes the door. Back upstairs, the cozy fall onesie goes on, and the evening belongs to Netflix, Paramount Plus, or a solid ’90s movie. I understand that reaction completely.

Still, helping a lot of families through this kind of move has taught me something worth passing along. You don’t have to do it all at once, and you don’t have to do it alone.

1. Start small and start early. The most common mistake is treating the whole house as one giant weekend project, and that sheer scale is exactly what paralyzes progress. Choose one drawer, one closet, or one corner of the basement storage, tape it off, and declare it the first step. Give yourself a few months rather than a few days, schedule sessions when distractions are least likely, and put on a favorite playlist before you begin.

2. Sort everything into four piles. Every item you touch belongs in one of four categories: keep, give to family or friends, donate or sell, and toss. That’s the entire system. Once each decision narrows to four options, a basement that resembles the closing scene of Raiders of the Lost Ark becomes far more manageable. For the list-makers, I also have an organization sheet and a color-coordinated labeling system I’m happy to send.

“You can keep the memories without keeping every single thing.”

3. Keep the memories, not everything. The hard pile isn’t the junk. It’s the meaningful items: the kids’ artwork, the photographs, the objects that hold a memory. What I tell everyone is that you’re allowed to keep the memories without keeping every single thing. Photograph an item before it goes, and create a digital version of your photo albums the whole family can share. Then give the special pieces to the people who will treasure them most.

4. Check before tossing old collectibles. One caution belongs here. Before anything heads to the curb, look twice at your kids’ old G.I. Joes, collectible baseball cards, comic books, CCS skateboarding catalogs, and Nintendo cartridges, because some of them may be pretty valuable. Have your kids come and claim them, and if they don’t, let me know.

5. Give yourself permission to let go. With the treasures set aside, permit yourself to release the rest, because holding on to everything isn’t the same as enjoying it. This is where a good estate sale or consignment company, a junk removal service, or a donation pickup makes real sense. I’m always glad to point you to the contractors I trust here in southeastern Wisconsin.

If the thought of all that stuff has kept you from moving, know that it’s one of the most normal things in the world. It’s no reason to feel stuck. It can be the moment you get the band back together and set out for your next destination. I help families through this all the time, so if you’re thinking about a move down the road, let’s talk. You’ll walk away with a plan that makes the whole process feel a lot easier, along with my organization sheet to get you started. Your next chapter can start with a single drawer.
